What We’re Fighting For: Current Legislation

The Wisconsin State Legislature is currently debating SB 469/AB 696: a bill that will ensure all forms of telecommunications are governed under the same set of rules and help encourage growth and competition in the industry. It’s abundantly clear that Wisconsin’s telecommunications regulatory system is out of date.

New technologies like wireless phones, voice-over-internet-protocol (VoIP), and high-speed broadband are not subject to the same laws and regulations as traditional landlines– even though consumers are more and more abandoning traditional landline service all together. The result of these outdated telecom rules? Some consumers are seeing the benefits of a competitive marketplace while other are being left behind.

If the State Legislature passes this bill, Wisconsin stands to benefit from these modernized telecom rules in the form of:

1. Job Creation
2. Economic Development
3. More Technology Innovation and Access

But most importantly, Wisconsin consumers will still enjoy strong consumer protections, including oversight over things like billing, sales, consumer fraud, and collections.
